IN140 University Seminar Learning Outcome Goals
The learning outcome goals for students taking IN140 are that students will be able to:
- illustrate use of critical and moral reasoning skills;
- explain the significance of contributions to community through service learning; and
- demonstrate effective communication skills that can be applied in academic and social contexts.
IN150 & IN151 Critical Writing, Reading & Research
Learning Outcome Goals
The learning outcome goals for students taking CWRR I (IN150) and CWRR II (IN151) are that students will able to:
- read and critique texts actively, deliberately and carefully;
- write polished, informed essays for personal, public and/or specialized audiences;
conduct research to participate in academic inquiry; and
- reflect on the uses of reading and writing in their public and personal lives to better understand themselves, their communities and the world.
IN250 United States Studies Learning Outcome Goals
The learning outcome goals for students taking IN250 are that students will be able to:
- critically respond to texts by or about some of the diverse cultures and people living in the United States;
- use discipline-appropriate sources to inform their critical analyses of diverse individuals’ or cultures’ experiences and perspectives; and
- write at least one well-developed critical analysis about cultural, structural, or institutional issues specific to the discipline of the course.
IN350 Global Studies Learning Outcome Goals
The learning outcome goals for students taking IN350 are that students will able to:
- compare cultural and social structures beyond those found in the United States,
- reflect on how the diversity of the world affects their everyday lives, and
- explore culturally diverse points of view through substantive research, including examination of primary sources.
Natural Science with a Lab Learning Outcome Goals
The learning outcome goals for students taking a natural science course with a lab are that students will able to:
- use logic and the scientific method to analyze the natural world and solve problems;
- analyze issues in science which are important both personally and globally; and
- connect theories and descriptions found in lectures and textbooks with real-world phenomena utilizing appropriate technology in laboratory and field environments.
Quantitative Reasoning Course Learning Outcome Goals
The learning outcome goals for students taking a course that fulfills the quantitative reasoning requirement are that students will be able to:
- use deductive reasoning in a formal, symbolic, axiomatic system, and
- apply the theorems of the system.
Fine Arts Course Learning Outcome Goals
The learning outcome goals for students taking a course that fulfills the fine arts requirement are that students will:
- demonstrate engagement in the creative process;
- demonstrate the ability to respond to and reflect on the aesthetic experience of the arts; and
- demonstrate connections between aesthetic experience and the larger cultural context of creation.
Off-campus Experience Learning Outcome Goals
The learning outcome goals for students fulfilling the off-campus learning experience are that students will be able to reflect meaningfully on:
- personal and professional connections between classroom learning and out-of-classroom learning experiences, and
- relationship-building skills and success in working with people and environments that differ from the student’s own.
Modern Language Studies (Track A) Learning Outcome Goals
The learning outcome goals for students taking (0-8 credits) of Modern Language Study (track A) are that students will be able to demonstrate:
- proficiency, at an intermediate level, in speaking, listening, reading, and writing in a foreign language; and
- comprehension and appreciation of the culture of a foreign country.
Semiotic Studies (Track B) Learning Outcome Goals
The learning outcome goals for students taking semiotic studies (track B) are that students will take three related courses (9 credits) from computer languages, natural language processing, linguistics, mathematics, symbolic logic, or music theory to:
- develop depth of learning in an area of semiotics studies, and
- demonstrate advanced levels of development in the chosen area.
Cultures and Societies Studies (Track C) Learning Outcome Goals
The learning outcome goals for students taking culture studies (track C) are that students will take three related courses in history, social institutions, and cultures (9 credits) preferably focusing on a single area of the world to:
- develop depth of learning in a related area of cultures and societal studies, and
- demonstrate advanced levels of development in the chosen area.
