Academic Bio

Shelley Cordulack has taught the History of Art at the University of Montana at Missoula and at Millikin University since 1974.

Her area of specialization is 1880 to the present, and her publications are wide-ranging, including articles on the work of individual artists, articles relating science/technology and art, and a book entitled Edvard Munch and the Physiology of Symbolism.

Teaching Philosophy

Her teaching philosophy may be summed up as follows:

  • Students need to learn some facts, some skills, something about themselves, something beyond themselves, and something that they don’t yet know they know.

  • In order for my students to be interested in what I teach, I have to stay interested in what I teach.

  • A subject is most interesting and most fun when you can relate it to something else.
  • One has to be flexible, and seize the moment; what you have planned for the day might lead into a vocabulary lesson, a grammar lesson, interview tips, a discussion of gender issues, or a Zen koan.

  • I am not afraid to use whatever is necessary to communicate a point to my students. I am not afraid to “make a fool of myself.”
