MU 100
Recital Attendance
Course Syllabus
A. Requirement
All students enrolled for applied lessons are required to register for MU100, Recital Attendance, every semester while at Millikin as part of their applied music experience. Each semester, music majors must attend 14 recitals to earn a "P." All other applied music students (including music minors and Music Theatre majors) must attend 7 recitals for a passing grade. Student teachers are not responsible for recital attendance during the semester of their student teaching experience.
B. Grading
A student's grade for MU100 will be reported each semester as "Pass/Fail". The grade is determined by the student's attendance of approved concerts or recitals offered in that particular semester. A failing grade in MU100 cannot be amended by retaking the class or attending extra performances in subsequent semesters. Although an "F" will not alter a student's grade point average (since it is a pass/fail course) the grade will appear permanently on the student's transcript.
NOTE: The weekly student recitals are a part of applied music study. Faculty members have the authority to take into account the student's participation both as listener and performer when grading a student for applied music study. This additional responsibility on the part of the student is above and beyond the Pass-Fail grade given to the student in MU100, Recital Attendance.
C. Approved Events
Each semester, a list of approved on-campus musical events will be posted in the lobby of the Perkinson Music Center. Included on the list will be all weekly daytime student recitals, individual student and faculty recitals, guest artist performances, the Kirkland Concert Series, and the concerts of School of Music organizations (including Music Theatre performances).
EXCEPTIONS: Events that are not primarily of a musical nature (e.g. plays, dance concerts) and high school music performances on campus will not count for the MU100 requirement. Attendance at off-campus performances will not be accepted for recital attendance.
If you have a question about recital attendance, contact Dr. Gary Shaw, Chair of Individual Performance Studies.
D. Performance Credit
Students who participate in an approved solo recital or Thursday recital will receive recital attendance credit. Student members of School of Music and College of Fine Arts organizations will not receive credit for performances in large or small ensembles.
E. Recording of Attendance
A student worker will be stationed at a designated location prior to the performance, and will record attendance by music students for MU100 purposes. It is the responsibility of the music student to be sure that his/her attendance has been recorded. Attendance takers are instructed to deny credit to students who arrive late or leave the event before its completion. Musical events taking place in Kirkland Theatre may be recorded in the School of Music office by bringing an event program or ticket stub to the School of Music office.
Attendance will be tallied each week during the semester and posted on the SOM student bulletin board and in the lobby of Mueller Hall. It is your responsibility to refer to this often so that you can keep track of your totals. If you don't agree with the posting of events recorded for you, contact Nancy Freeman at the SOM before the last day of classes in the semester. Questions? Contact Dr. Gary Shaw, PMC 321
