Department of Theatre & Dance

Prospective Students

The Department of Theatre and Dance offers five major degree programs and two minor programs all within the context of a liberal arts education. Competent craftsmanship, creativity, and the development of artistic responsibility are emphasized throughout a student's career.

Students are admitted to the B.F.A. programs based upon auditions and/or interviews and only after being admitted to the University. Students must pass a second audition/interview at the end of their freshman year to continue in B.F.A. programs.

Degree Programs

Audition/Interview For BFA programs

All BFA performance majors, including freshmen, are required to audition for main stage productions; all other students are welcome to audition as well.

Ample opportunities for performance are available during the main stage and studio seasons (typically 2 musicals, 3 plays, 1 opera). Along with the main stage theatre season there is a dance concert, PipeDreams Lab Theatre (30-40 one-acts), and theatre for children.

Three performance facilities are available for theatrical productions. Kirkland Fine Arts Center's 2,000-seat auditorium is used for musicals performed with full orchestration. Albert Taylor Theatre, a 280-seat proscenium theatre, is the site for other productions in the main stage season. Pipe Dreams is a small, 90-seat experimental space which serves as both a main stage space and as a laboratory for student-directed productions.
