Department of Theatre & Dance

 

Minors

While not an official minor a student may also choose Theatre Minor with Design/Technical Emphasis

Students interested in these degrees should consult with a faculty member in the Department of Theatre and Dance.

There is no audition/interview required to be in either of these Minor Degree programs.

Theatre Minor

To receive a minor in theatre, a student must complete 21 credits in theatre course including:

  • TH 131, Play Analysis (3 credits)
  • TH 141, Acting I (3 credits)
  • TH 253, Stagecraft (3 credits)
  • TH 321, Directing I (3 credits

Additional courses will be arranged with an adviser and approved by the departmental chair. Minors are expected to contribute to the production program.

Dance Minor

Dance classes are offered in Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Modern and Theatre Dance from beginning through advanced levels. Three studios are available and there is a dance concert presented once a year. Master classes often are taught by members of dance companies performing at Kirkland Fine Arts Center or by invited guests.

A student interested in a Dance minor should consult with the Head of the Dance Program. Students may begin courses for the minor at any time, but may only officially declare a Dance Minor at the end of the Sophomore year with approval from the Head of the Dance Department.

Specialization:
In addition to the core course requirements listed each student will select two areas of specialization and complete a total of 9 credits combined in both areas. At least 5 credits must be at the 300 level or above.

A Dance Minor consists of a minimum of 21 credits including the following classes:

  • Required core courses: (students may be placed in a higher level course by their instructors, but must still fulfill the requirement by taking instruction in each area)
  • DA 101, Jazz Dance I (1 credit)
  • DA 102, Tap I (1 credit)
  • DA 105, Modern I (1 credit)
  • DA 107, Ballet I (1 credit)
  • DA 446, Theatre Dance (2 credits)
  • DA 430, Dance Concert (1 credit)
  • DA 490, Choreography (3 credits
  • additionally choose one:
    TH 141, Acting I (3 credits)
    MT 111, Music Theory (2 credits)

Theatre Minor with Design/Technical Emphasis

A student with this emphasis must complete 21 credits in theatre courses including:

  • TH 131, Play Analysis (3 credits)
  • TH 141, Acting I (3 credits)
  • TH 253, Stagecraft (3 credits)
  • TH 321, Directing I (3 credits)

The additional credits for the minor will be fulfilled through various Design Lab courses arranged with an adviser and approved by the departmental chair. Minors are expected to contribute to the production program by working four hours per week in either costume or scene shop. Each minor will be assigned one major technical project each semester.
