in the era of the polio scare, the play centers upon the world of Elizabeth
Willow, a girl who suffered from polio as a young baby and has never been
able to walk. Wheelchair bound with heavy braces on her legs, we see her
world as she strives for a satisfying, normal life amidst the casual,
unintentional cruelties of the citizens of her hometown the fictional
Jackson, Indiana. |

The play is an ensemble piece with a rich tapestry of emotions. Scenes include the cruelties of children, the insensitivity of "community do-gooders" and particularly, the well-intentioned travesties performed by her parents who strive to deal with this tragedy as well as they possibly can. The performance style is ensemble acting as many actors take on several roles. The play is staged on a marvelous unit set in which the audience is required to use their imagination as several scenes are played in the same locations. I believe this to be an exciting piece of theatre with a roller coaster of emotions. |
