| Synopsis |
|
The action takes place during the French Revolution. Blanche, daughter of the Marquis de la Force, is unusually timid, sensitive and fearful. She resolves to become a Carmelite nun to both retreat from society and learn to master her fears. She soon finds life as a nun no less upsetting than her previous life. The anti-Catholic sentiments of the revolution lead to the destruction of the convent buildings and way of life. The nuns must choose a path to follow. They can publicly renounce their order and join the ‘underground’ body of faithful believers, or defy the court and become martyrs. Opinions on martyrdom within the group differ—can one choose to be a martyr or must one wait for God to choose? As they struggle with their decision the terrified Blanche flees. She will have to confront her own worst fears as her sisters ascend the scaffold.
