PILOT STUDY: MOODLE, AN OPEN-SOURCE COURSE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
Pat Pettit and Joe Hardenbrook (Information Technology), and Michael O'Conner (English/Honors Program)
Start Date: April 2007
As part of the university's ongoing effort to identify a suitable electronic portfolio system, this project will provide support for a pilot study of Moodle (Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment). This software has been chosen for the pilot study due to its structural similarities to the Blackboard online system currently in use at the university. Moodle provides all the capabilities of Blackboard and adds an electronic portfolio management system. Additional benefits are substantial savings in annual licensing fees as well as the ability to easily interface Moodle with the university's primary data management system (Banner) at no additional cost.
The pilot study will include training and development, conversion of selected Blackboard courses to the Moodle system, and thorough exploration of the new system's portfolio capabilities.
