
For the Tebineri, or "hand-pinching" method, a ball of clay is placed in the hand. The thumb of the opposite hand is pressed vertically into the clay until the desired depth is reached. Then the clay is pinched firmly between the thumb and forefinger all the way around until a thick-walled cylinder emerges. When the form is finished, the bowl is given a coil foot. "The pebbled, almost faceted surfaces and uniformly irregular lips are much admired by devotees of the tea ceremony" (Sanders 102).
