Synchronous Chat Tips
- have a defined and set gathering time for your chat
- make sure students have practiced within this environment before the
meeting
- keep chat group sizes manageable, too large a group leads to chaos
- have a defined task or a defined topic or set of topics
- make sure students know the chat assignment is valuable (graded)
- obtain an archived copy of the chat (Blackboard/WebCT provide this
automatically)
- appoint a chat leader, who knows how to begin, conduct and end the chat
Hint: in Blackboard and WebCT, use the Groups function, which allow
for smaller instant chats with designated student groups.
