Strategies for Academic Success

Transitioning from high school to college, forming new social connections, balancing school with work, making healthy choices, etc. can present challenges in meeting university-level academic standards even for students who have been successful in the past.

Students are placed on probation whenever they fail to achieve or maintain an overall Millikin grade point of 2.0 (C), and Student Success has intentionally designed programs to partner with students to address these common challenges.

First time probation: Students are enrolled in a mandatory seminar - IN 110: Strategies for Academic Success. This one-credit, pass/fail course involves weekly educational seminars, and one-on-one developmental appointments with Student Success staff members. The seminar is designed to identify issues the student must address to be successful at Millikin. Student Success works with the student’s academic advisor and others to form a partnership to support the student’s efforts to improve their grade point average.

Continuing or reoccurring probation: Student Success staff meet in one-on-one developmental appointments with these students throughout the semester. Student Success also works with the student’s academic advisor and others to further support the student’s efforts to improve their grade point average.
