Alpha Epsilon Delta
The Pre-Medical Honor Society

Alpha Epsilon Delta is a pre-medical honorary fraternity founded in 1926 by 15 pre-medical students at the University of Alabama.

Today, Alpha Epsilon Delta is the world's largest body devoted to pre-medical education. AED’s membership exceeds 144,000 in 186 chapters.

The object of the Society is:

  • to encourage and recognize excellence in premedical scholarship
  • to stimulate an appreciation of the importance of pre-medical education in the study of medicine
  • to promote cooperation and contacts between medical and pre-medical students and educators in developing an adequate program of pre-medical education
  • to bind together similarly interested students
  • to use its knowledge for the benefit of health organizations, charities and the community.

Alpha Epsilon Delta is an affiliated society of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a member of the Association of College Honor Societies.

Membership in Alpha Epsilon Delta is an honor bestowed in recognition of superior scholastic achievement and affords an opportunity to develop qualities of initiative, leadership and self-education by participating in the activities of the Chapter and Society.

An active member of Alpha Epsilon Delta is a student who is preparing for a career in a health profession, has completed at least four semesters of premedical work in college with the minimum scholastic requirements as described in the Constitution, who has been initiated into the Society by an active chapter, paid the national membership fee, and has been registered in the official records of the National Office. Active members in the chapter receive the Scalpel and the AED Newsletter.

Chapter activities include meetings where faculty members, physicians and other qualified personnel from pre-professional schools discuss subjects of interest and concern to pre-professional students. In addition, many chapters participate in campus and community programs of national health organizations such as those conducted by the American Red Cross, the American Heart Association, and the American Cancer Society.
