Millikin University - Decatur, IL
Symphony Orchestra Guild of Decatur

The Mission of the Symphony Orchestra Guild of Decatur is to promote and support symphonic music, to encourage educational opportunities that include all segments of our population, and to provide an ever increasing level of artistry and audience appreciation.

Millikin University was founded in 1906 and by 1907 an Orchestra of 24 members was pictured in the first Yearbook! In 1914 the Decatur Orchestra was formed with 58 musicians from the town participating. In 1947 these two groups merged to form the Millikin-Decatur Symphony Orchestra, which is the group we have today.

The Decatur Youth Symphony has their own page.

The Guild was formed in 1974 by a group of local Decatur residents to provide financial support and service to the Millikin-Decatur Symphony Orchestra. It also was formed to provide educational opportunities for young students and adults and provide scholarships for musical opportunities for students.

Each year the guild provides a grant to the orchestra to help augment the financial budget provided by Millikin University. This additional source of funding helps with the musicians' expenses, music rental, and helping with expenses for guest performers.
