Percussion Commission Fund

Dear Friends,

I am pleased to announce the unveiling of the 2014-15 Percussion Commission Fund. I hope that you will consider joining this important initiative in support of the Millikin Percussion Ensemble and contemporary chamber music. Through previous commissions, we have attracted some extraordinary composers with significant credentials. The subsequent recordings of these works have led to the ensemble receiving notable accolades, including the 2013 Downbeat Student Music Award for “Best Classical Group.” Help us continue our tradition of excellence by supporting this year’s campaign. No amount is too small!

This year’s commission goes to Zack Stanton (1983). He is a composer and conductor who has written for orchestra, wind ensemble, choir, and chamber ensembles of various sizes. Recent commissions include works for Sarunas Jankauskas (clarinet), Jared Broussard (trumpet), Anne Marie Cherry (French Horn) and Line Upon Line Percussion. During the 2011-2012 season, the Austin Symphony Orchestra premiered the orchestral version of “Triple Venti Latté" under music director Peter Bay. Also active as a performer, Stanton has served as a pianist and conductor for the University of Texas New Music Ensemble and conductor and composition co-chair for the annual GAMMA-UT conference (Graduate Association of Music and Musicians at the University of Texas).
Stanton will be on campus March 1 for the Midwest premiere of his “Concerto for Piano and Wind Ensemble” performed by the new coordinator of Millikin’s piano area, Silvan Negrutiu, and the Millikin Wind Ensemble. This residency will provide the percussion ensemble a unique opportunity to work with Stanton during the formative stages of the commission. The new work for (large) percussion ensemble will be premiered on April 25, 2015 at the annual Masterworks concert in Kirkland Fine Arts Center.

Our goal this year is to raise $3000. You may send a check payable to Millikin University to the Millikin University Alumni & Development Office, 1184 W. Main St., Decatur, IL 62522. Please indicate "Percussion Music Commissions" on the memo line of your check. Credit card donations may be made online at the link below or by calling Millikin University's Alumni & Development Office at 217.424.6383. Thank you for considering this important initiative.

Sincerely,
Brian Justison
