Dr. Anne M. Matthews is the Dean of Teaching and Learning and Associate Professor of English.  She specializes in autoethnography, African American literature, multicultural literature, first-year composition, and Writing Center tutoring.  Before arriving at Millikin in 2003, she taught at the University of Missouri-Rolla and at Lane Colege, a historically black school in Jackson, Tennessee. It was at Lane that Dr. Matthews began to integrate her academic work with her passion for social justice, and she has continued on this path at Millikin, both in the classroom and in her autoethnographic research.  She is the advisor or co-advisor for a number of minority organizations, including the Long-Vanderburg Scholars Program, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Sigma Lambda Gamma Sorority (Millikin Colony), and Sister Circle.  In recognition of her dedication to undergraduate students, Dr. Matthews has won numerous teaching awards throughout her career, culminating in Millikin’s 2008 Teaching Excellence and Campus Leadership Award.
