Shuman Time Magazine

This new feature highlights a “did you know” MU fact that will leave you feeling proud that you attended Millikin!

Did you know … Millikin Trustee Emeritus Charles Shuman appeared on the cover of TIME Magazine on Sept. 3, 1965. As the outspoken president of the American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) at the time, the article covers a “man who wants the Government to get off the farm,” since Shuman was a longtime critic of government farm programs that sought to control crop production and set prices.

Charles also met with President John F. Kennedy at the White House in 1962 to discuss the AFBF policies. A picture of the two appeared in the December 1963 issue of The American Farm Bureau Federation’s official newsletter.

Originally from Sullivan, Ill., Charles served on the Millikin Board of Trustees from 1963-1984 and was known for fighting against teacher tenure. He died in 1999 at age 92.
