On Oct. 9, the Millikin Board of Trustees announced the election of Dr. Patrick E. White as the university's 15th president. Dr. White has been serving as Millikin's interim president since July 2013. Prior to working at Millikin, Dr. White served seven years as the 15th president of Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Ind. The Millikin community contributed more than 5,100 pounds to the 12th annual WSOY Community Food Drive in early October. “Millikin University is a caring community of students and scholars,” says President Patrick White (right). “When we see people in need, Millikin responds.”

At the Nov. 9 football game, spring graduates Brittany Cardott (left) and Kaley Wittrock (right) will each receive a Lindsay Medallion in recognition of their outstanding athletic achievements. Named in honor of the late F. Merrill Lindsay, trustee emeritus, and his late wife, “Sis” Lindsay, the medallion traditionally honors two student-athletes each year. Cardott will be recognized for her volleyball skills and Wittrock for her swimming talents.

Millikin is again partnering with the Strategic National Arts Alumni Project (SNAAP) to learn more about how studying the arts has influenced the lives and careers of arts alumni. Many MU alumni who earned degrees within the College of Fine Arts during the last 20 years will receive an email invitation to participate in the user-friendly survey within the next week.
The information gathered will be used to strengthen Millikin’s program and help other arts educators across the country better meet the needs of their students.

Next year marks the 70th anniversary of the D-Day invasion of Normandy, France, by Allied forces during World War II. During October 2014, alumni and friends will travel to Europe for a very special experience: “Memorials of War: Normandy & Paris.” Highlights of the 10-day trip include Paris, the Vel d’Hiv Memorial, an Eiffel Tower dinner, Normandy, the Memorial Peace Museum, D-Day landing beaches and much more. Nationally known health care adviser, author and former Washington Post reporter Ceci Connolly will present “LANDMARK: The Inside Story of America’s New Health Care Law” on Tuesday, Nov. 19, at 7:30 p.m. in Richards Treat University Center.
A 25-year veteran of the journalism field, Connolly is now managing director of the Health Research Institute for PriceWaterhouseCoopers, where she guides corporations, foundations and governmental bodies on implementation of the Affordable Care Act.
This event, the 2013 Thomas W. Ewing Lectureship, is free and open to the public, and no reservations are required.

The James Millikin Awards are presented to non-alumni friends of the University who have shown outstanding financial and/or volunteer support. This year’s recipients are John Snyder and TK Partners.
Snyder has generously supported Millikin for several years and also created the fund the John C. and Carma Storm Snyder Scholarship to benefit students from Macon and Shelby Counties.
TK Partners, a joint venture between Decatur’s Romano and Demirjian families, has been instrumental providing a route to create a permanent home for Millikin’s Exercise Science and Sport department in the West Towne Square building.

Margaret Foran Vaughn ’90, director of government affairs for the Illinois Firefighters Association, recently presented Fire Safety awards to Millikin president Dr. Patrick White and representatives from Alpha Chi Omega; Delta Delta Delta; Pi Beta Phi and Tau Kappa Epsilon. The Oct. 5 award ceremony honored the dedication to student safety as evidenced by the installation of sprinkler systems in all on-campus residence areas and Greek houses. Although state fire safety laws require all university residence halls and Greek houses to be retrofitted with sprinkler systems within the next 10-15 years, Millikin has mandated sprinkler systems for on-campus housing and Greek houses since 2000.
