Dr. Jeffery Aper named provost.
New Provost

Dr. Jeffery Aper is MU’s new provost. For the past 11 years, Dr. Aper has served as provost at his alma mater, Blackburn College, in Carlinville, Ill., where he was chief academic officer and oversaw the athletics, information technology, enrollment services and student life departments, among others.

Apollo 13 astronaut says “Failure is not an option.”
Fred Haise

Fred Haise, Apollo 13 astronaut and Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient, will present “Failure is Not an Option” at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 22, in Kirkland Fine Arts Center. The event is free and open to the public; no tickets or reservations required.

Although best known as a crew member on the ill-fated Apollo 13 lunar mission, Haise also served on the backup crew for the Apollo 8, 11 and 16 missions. Over his 25-year career, Haise logged 9,100 hours of flying time in more than 80 types of aircraft. His presentation is the 2014 T.W. Samuels Lecture.

Attention Decatur-area alums: Millikin Mixer networking event set for April 23.

Network with faculty/staff, alums, students, employers and friends of Millikin at the Millikin Mixer next Wednesday, April 23, from 5:30 ‒ 7:30 p.m. at the Decatur Club, 158 W. Prairie. The event is co-sponsored by the MU Career Center, Skeff Distributing and Brothers Moving Forward. The mixer will feature a cash bar; each participant will receive one complimentary beverage ticket. Bronze Man Books Releases Second Installment in “Let’s Talk Kids” Series.

On Tuesday, April 29, the public is invited to attend a book signing celebrating the release of the second installment in the “Let’s Talk Kids” series by local author and Baby TALK founder Claudia Quigg ’75. Bronze Man Books, MU’s student-operated press, published the first book in the series, “Becoming a Family,” last spring. The collection of reflections on childrearing from pregnancy through toddlerhood was first published in Quigg’s “Let’s Talk Kids” column for the Decatur Herald and Review. The new release, “Facing Family Challenges,” offers more advice to help parents through the inevitable rough patches in raising a family. The event is set for 4-5:30 p.m. at the Alumni & Development office. Snacks and beverages will be provided, and copies of both “Let’s Talk Kids” books will be available for purchase.

The alumni and development office is looking for a new associate director of donor engagement to manage donor engagement functions and recognition programs and events. Our thanks and best wishes to Angie Hawk Cox '06, who is leaving this position for new endeavors after eight years with our office!

MU's marketing & media relations department is also looking for a full-time writer to assist in developing both online and print content for the university.

Brian Taylor ’86 to receive Excellence in Entrepreneurship Award.

On May 1, Millikin’s Center for Entrepreneurship will present the first Excellence in Entrepreneurship Award to Brian Taylor ’86. Taylor is founder and CEO of Pine River Capital Management, an international asset management firm headquartered in Minnesota.

The Excellence in Entrepreneurship Award recognizes Millikin alumni who have demonstrated outstanding business acumen and entrepreneurial success, true to the entrepreneurial educational foundation offered at the university.

Celebrate Millikin's birthday on campus April 30!
Come help us celebrate Millikin’s 113th birthday! All students, faculty, alumni and friends are invited to attend an "Everything Blue" dessert reception to celebrate Millikin's Founder's Day from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in lower RTUC. At noon, MU President Patrick White and Jacqui Rogers, president of the Student Senate, will speak on what Millikin means to them.

Can't make the reception? Honor Millikin's birthday by wearing blue all day!

Kruml named Tabor dean.
Dr. Kruml

Dr. Susan Kruml has been appointed dean of the Tabor School of Business after serving as interim dean since last summer. A professor of management at Millikin since 2008, Kruml has been teaching management and consulting for more than 15 years.

Get your foursome together for the Big Blue Golf Outing at Hickory Point Golf Club on Friday, June 27. Check-in and lunch start at noon, with shotgun start at 1 p.m. Dinner and awards immediately follow.

The team registration fee of $500 includes greens fees, lunch, dinner, snacks, prizes and a Millikin polo shirt for each team member.
