Florence Aileen Nichols Byers, 82, died June 29, 2012 at Decatur Memorial Hospital.
Florence was born October 9, 1929 to A. Reed and Ruth Nichols. Her father was a major in the army and served in France in World War I and in the Pacific in World War II. Alongside her three brothers she grew in Decatur, until her father was called to active duty in 1939. Then the family lived on army bases in Tennessee and Texas and returned to Decatur, Illinois in 1942 when her father was deployed overseas. In 1947, she graduated from Stephen Decatur High School.
She married Frank Byers in 1949 and they had four children: Sandi, Frank, Janet, and Steve. They divorced in the 1960s. As a single mother raising four children, she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from Millikin University and then earned a Masters of Social Work from the University of Illinois. She worked at Illinois Public Aid where she cared for her clients for many years.
Florence was the consummate caregiver, always strong and steadfast. Her devotion, advice, and aid never wavered. For 18 years, she cared daily for her mother. In her retirement, Florence traveled to China and England. She enjoyed lunch with her friends, sewing, and chasing a good bargain.
Florence is survived by her daughter Sandi Sorensen and friend Dick Anderson of Decatur, IL, her son Frank Byers II and friend Kay Moser of Decatur, IL, her daughter Janet Byers-Dent and her husband David Byers-Dent of Sun Prairie, WI, and her son Steve Byers and his wife Ginger Byers of Prairie Grove, IL. She has 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother Robert Nichols of Mattoon, Illinois.
She is preceded in death by her mother, father, and two brothers.
