Martha Anne (Marty) Scherer of Decatur passed away on May 27, 2014 from complications of Alzheimer’s. She was 82.
Marty was born on February 24, 1932 to William and Mary Catherine Snyder in Cherry Point, IL. She was a graduate of Paris High School, Paris, Illinois, class of 1950 and Milliken University, Decatur, Illinois class of 54. While attending Milliken, she met the man of her dreams. She married Eugene F. (Bud) Scherer on June 19, 1954. Marty and Bud started married life in Monmouth, IL but settled in Decatur in 1957 where they ultimately raised their family.
Marty and Bud have three children, sons David “Matt” Scherer and wife Jacqui of Texas and Christopher Scherer and wife Mary Jo of Maryland. They also have a daughter Cammy Kinstedt and her life partner Armando Garcia of New Mexico. The couple has four grandchildren Jessica, Emily, Peter and Kate Scherer, two step grandchildren Ryan Kinstedt and wife Julie and Vionka Conklin and husband Dan, along with four step great grand children.
Marty was an elementary school teacher and taught over 35 years to students at Holy Family Catholic School, and Washington, John Adams, and Parsons Schools with the Decatur Public School District. She has many students who remember her fondly for her “you can do it” attitude. It was a long time family joke that Marty just could not graduate from grade school.
Marty and Bud were founding members of Holy Family Catholic Parish. She was a devout Catholic and an active member of the parish community through the years. Marty was known for her fried Crappie and many of the parish’s priests have sat at her table partaking of her excellent fish dinners.
Marty was a “friend of Bill” and helped many people become overcome their addictions. She was an inspiration to all who met her and sponsored many members. In addition to helping others, she was a dedicated and loving friend to many. Marty always had time to listen to a person’s problems and offered timely and quality advice. Marty had an excellent singing voice and a wicked sense of humor which she often used.
Marty is survived by her wonderful husband Bud, her dear brother William (Bill) Snyder of Tampa Florida, her children, nephew Dan Snyder and wife Julie of Chicago, and grandchildren and great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her mother and father, a grandson Andrew Scherer, and her sister-in-law Loretta Snyder.
Marty died after a very long 10 year battle with Alzheimer’s. Her devoted husband Bud took care of her at home for 7 years and after a stroke, she was transferred to Heritage Manor nursing home in Mount Zion. There she received high quality care from her dedicated nursing team. The family is permanently indebted to the staff.
