Carol Ann Bowen, 72 of Bement, IL. passed away on Saturday, August 20, 2011 at 3:13 P.M. at the St. Joseph's Hospital, St. Charles, MO. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 24, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. at the Bement United Methodist Church, 249 N. Piatt St., Bement, IL.
Carol was born on November 10, 1938 in Decatur, IL. a daughter of Robert E. and Ellen M. Sablotny. She married Loren Ray Bowen on May 17, 1964 in Decatur, IL. and he survives of Bement, IL.
Surviving children include; L. Patrick Bowen of Bement, IL. and Lori (Bradley) Tillock of Shiloh, IL. Surviving grandchildren include; Muriel and Woody Bowen of Bement, IL. and Alexander and Kaitlyn Tillock of Shiloh, IL.. She is also survived by her brother and his wife; Robert W. Sablotny and Jean Richards of Springfield, IL. and a sister-in-law and her husband; Helen (Bowen) Marx of Wickenberg, AZ and two nephews; Robert S. Sablotny of Boulder, CO. and James Sablotny of Denver, CO. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Carol was a graduate of Millikin University in Decatur, IL. She worked as a home economist for Illinois Power in Belleville, IL, and as a Home Economics teacher in Macon, IL. She was later a University of Illinois Extension advisor in Macon and Piatt Counties. She also worked as editor of the Bement Record. She was a public library trustee for many years and later became Director at the Bement Public Library. She retired from the role last December after over 23 years of service. Carol was also past secretary of the Bement Community Council. She was very active in the Illinois Rural Carriers' Auxillary. Carol was elected Secretary of the National Rural Letter Carriers' Auxillary in 1995 and served for 5 years, traveling throughout the country giving speeches promoting their philanthropic work. Carol was a member of the Bement United Methodist Church.
She loved spending time with her grandchildren and one of her greatest joys was accompanying her daughter on a 2 ½ week trip to China to bring home her granddaughter, Kaitlyn.
