Effingham Daily News Kenneth L. Hartrich, 73, of Newton, passed away at 8:47 a.m. Friday, May 17, 2013, at his home.
Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. today, May 20, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, Newton, with the Rev. Al Kemme celebrating Mass. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Ste. Marie. Visitation was held Sunday at the church. Memorials may be made to the Newton Community High School Academic Foundation or the American Diabetes Association. Arrangements are under the care of Blake-Buchanan Funeral Home in Newton.
Kenneth was born on Oct. 23, 1939, in Ste. Marie, the son of Albert “Snook” and Marjorie (Barthelme) Hartrich.
Kenneth attended Millikin University, where he was the captain of the track team and was also a linebacker on the football team.
Kenneth married Sandra Bixler on June 11, 1960, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Newton.
Kenneth was a teacher in Bradford from 1961 to 1965 and then in Oakwood from 1965 until 1974.
He then owned and operated Hartrich Star Market in Newton. In 1997, he returned to teaching at ROE 12 in Robinson until his retirement.
Kenneth was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church in Newton. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus 1704 and a former member of the Lions and Elks clubs. He was an avid Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears fan.
Kenneth is survived by his wife of 52 years, Sandra Hartrich of Newton; mother, Marjorie Hartrich of Decatur; children, Lana (Doug) Dhom of Newton, Bruce (Traci) Hartrich of Godfrey and Eric (Terry) Hartrich of Smyrna, Ga.; grandchildren, Kendra (Ryan) Litteken of Troy, Tyson (Dana) Dhom of St. Louis, Kelcie, Bailey and Christopher Hartrich of Godfrey, and Sterling Hartrich of Smyrna, Ga.; great-grandchildren, Brayden and Averie Litteken of Troy; and brothers, Dennis (Judy) Hartrich of White House, Tenn., and David (Earlene) Hartrich of Decatur.
Kenneth was preceded in death by his father.
