Gerald H. (Jerry) Althoff, 88, Hoschton, GA, formerly of Hot Springs Village, AR, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 24, 2013, in Portland, OR.
Jerry (Jeep) was born October 2, 1925 in Teutopolis, IL, to the late Ferd and Rita (Burford) Althoff. After graduating from Teutopolis Township High School where he excelled in basketball and received his lifelong nickname Jeep, he enlisted in the Navy, on September 30, 1943 and served honorably in WWII as an Aviation Radioman 3c stationed in the Aleutian Islands. Upon his discharge from the Navy Jerry attended Millikin University in Decatur, IL. Jerry continued to excel in sports, most notably as a point guard for the second place basketball team in the 1952 NAIA tournament. Jerry graduated from Millikin University in 1952 where he met and married the love of his life, Alice Marilyn Gray on February 14, 1953.
Jerry and Marilyn had 7 children whom they loved, nurtured and cherished. Jerry retired from a successful career in life insurance before relocating to Hot Springs Village, AR, where they lived the remaining years of their life surrounded by dear friends and cherished memories. Jerry was full of passion and possessed a larger than life personality; a large hole will be felt with his absence. He loved sports and had a lifelong passion for the game of golf. He loved sharing a good joke, and was blessed with many treasured friends that will dearly miss him.
Jerry is survived by his 7 children; Gary (Reggie) Althoff of Dallas, TX; Anne (Steve) Plotz of Cedar Rapids, IA, Barbara (Jim) Bone of Hoschton, GA, Linda (Al) Bowman of Bloomington, IL, Mark (Teresa) Althoff of Aurora, IL, Lisa (Ian)Symmonds, of Portland, OR, and David Althoff, of Barrington, IL, 19 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Jerry was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 59 years, (A. Marilyn Althoff), his parents, (Ferd and Rita (Burford) Althoff) and his siblings (sister Celeste and brothers John and Tobias Althoff).
