February 2011 - Mary Spencer

It is a pleasure to accept the recommendation of the Employee Recognition Committee that Mary Spencer be honored as Employee of the Month for February 2011.  Mary began working at Millikin University as the Costumer in the Department of Theatre and Dance on January 16, 1989.  Currently she is the Administrative Assistant in that department.

The Employee Recognition Committee received very compelling support for Mary’s nomination, including the following comments:

“Watching Mary Spencer direct the recruiting for Theatre is like watching a traffic cop! She is checking prospects in for their audition, calming them, answering questions, and directing them to the next location. She answers numerous questions and always with the gentle calm that surrounds her. She coordinates the audition with her faculty, uses current students to speak with prospective parents and students and when Mary speaks, they all listen to her guidance. Mary is the Theatre's front door, welcoming all who enter the department. She deserves to be recognized for all her efforts in recruiting faculty and students, preparing for a theatre production, or simply making an appointment for a student.”

“We've had 3 days of prospect nominations, including honors day. Mary coordinates us, the prospective students and the current students. She made special schedules for students with joint auditions in theatre and music as well as honors auditions. We couldn't do it without her, she's indispensable.”

“We were in a faculty meeting recently, and I thought, ‘One day Mary will retire. And THEN what will we do?’ She is the glue that holds our department together. She is the all-knowing mother that keeps us from crashing and burning. Her work with our auditions process for incoming students is a monumental task, and she does it so well... as if she doesn't already have a million other things to do. AND I HAVE NEVER HEARD HER COMPLAIN.  I'm quite certain she has had reason to!”

“Mary Spencer is the epicenter of the Department of Theatre and Dance. She is unfailingly pleasant, helpful to faculty, students and visiting families. She is a treasure!”

“Over and over at the end of (audition) day, I hear from prospective families how efficient and friendly our process is at Millikin, and that is because of Mary Spencer. In February alone she set up three audition days.”

“. . . . ..she guides our student workers in the department. There are a variety of ways our students help, from creating the programs for our shows, to coordinating and posting employment bulletins, to setting up lobby displays for shows. She has high standards for them, and therefore the students aren't just putting in their work time, they are learning valuable skills and appropriate office behavior under her mentorship.”

“Our Theatre and Dance department succeeds both internally and externally with the public because of Mary Spencer.”

and from a student ~

“Mary is a great person who truly cares for every single student that steps on this campus.  She is always helpful even though she has so much to do every single day.  Mary is key in helping this department run smoothly and everyone you can talk to appreciates her so much.  The students here love and appreciate her so much that we make a ‘Mary Spencer Appreciation Day’ where we all bring her gifts or just say hi and that we appreciate her throughout the day.  Even through breaks, she always keeps everyone informed.  She announces any new job opportunity or internship as well as news throughout the department to keep us on the ‘in’.  Mary is an important part of the everyday life and workings of the theatre and dance department and I guarantee that if you ask any student or faculty, they will tell you that she is deserving of this award 10 times over.”

Congratulations, Mary, on such a well-deserved honor!
