August 2011 - Jesus Velasco

I am pleased to announce that Millikin University’s Employee Recognition Committee has selected Jesus Velasco as Employee of the Month for August 2011. Jesus has served as the Coordinator for International Student Services in the Center for International Education since August 3, 2009.

The Committee received compelling nominations for Jesus, including the following comments:

I would like to nominate Jesus Velasco for Employee of the Month for August. Our office works closely with the Center for International Education through our immersion program and our international students who come to campus every semester. It is a joy and privilege to work with Jesus. He is not only one of the friendliest and kindest persons on campus, but one of the most dedicated to providing the best experience to a very important, growing population on our campus, our international students. Jesus does so much for the students. I'm sure if you talk to any of them, they will tell you they couldn't have made it here without Jesus. I love working with him on the immersion travel courses - he is my partner, and he is a huge help in making sure the paperwork is completed, and that our students have the best experience possible when they go abroad.

Jesus is the go to for international students. He is always there to answer their questions, take them shopping, making sure they have their schedules, books, etc. Jesus is also the person that our MU students, studying abroad will speak to if they need help. He will Skype with them, and work until he has their problems solved. For a program that is growing, Jesus has the experience, the knowledge, and skills to help everyone who walks in the door. Jesus never quits until the problem is solved. He is a good MU representative on campus and off campus! He deserves to be the August Employee of the Month.

As Coordinator of International Student Services, Jesus carries tremendous responsibility for our incoming international students, every step of the way. After they are admitted, he must carefully review their documents and ensure that they fulfill all requirements for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. It is Jesus who navigates SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) to issue the I-20, so the student can obtain an F-1 visa.Jesus is Millikin's expert on the special visas, employment permits, and other government documents that international students need. Without Jesus, the Center for International Education (CIE) would not be able to have such a successful international student program at Millikin! Jesus is amazing. He untangles mix-ups and solves mysteries and jumps hurdles and spends countless hours on the telephone sorting out the craziest things that happen to our incoming international students, and our students who are studying abroad. He helps every student with every problem, and keeps his sense of humor and his wonderful smile. On top of all of those responsibilities, Jesus does the work that an administrative assistant would do, if CIE had one. He serves as receptionist, record-keeper, researcher, travel planner, and organizer of countless credit card receipts from immersion and recruiting trips. He also serves as advisor to the International Student Organization, and supports their events with great enthusiasm. Did I already say that Jesus is amazing? He is one of the most hard-working and dedicated Millikin employees I know, and certainly deserves to be named Employee of the Month.

Jesus has been in the Center for International Education for the last two years and is the most important person to any international student on campus. He has grown into a hard-working International Students Coordinator!!!!
