Millikin University is pleased to announce that registration for Millikin Summer Immersion courses will begin on Thursday, April 10, 2014. The catalog of Summer Immersion course offerings is currently available online at

Summer Immersion provides opportunities for students to earn credits during summer break and complete challenging courses with great topics. Summer Immersion is designed to fit the needs of current Millikin students, incoming first-year students, adult learners, students attending other universities, and high school students wanting to gain credits in escrow.

"At Millikin, we love the fact that during summer immersion courses our faculty can explore new approaches and teach new topics," said Dr. Randy Brooks, dean of the College of Arts & Sciences. "The students get to learn in a variety of ways, whether it's behind the wheel of a car or online. The students have the opportunity to immerse themselves in several explorations."

A wide range of classes are offered with a variety of different subjects covered. This year's program also offers hybrid online and several travel courses, including the following.

Chemistry of Art
Class Dates: June 2 – July 3

This course is a laboratory-centered course for non-majors in which the fundamental concepts in chemistry will be investigated within the framework of their relevance to art. This course will explore the concepts of light, elements, organic and inorganic compounds, solubility, pH, chemical reactions, and more.

Introduction to Driver's Education
Class Dates: May 19 – 24 (Hybrid Online)
Meeting Days: Monday, May 19, 9 a.m. & Online

This online course covers the basic knowledge of safe and responsible driving techniques including vehicle control, driving environments, and emergencies. This course is the first requirement for the new Illinois Board of Education's Driver Education endorsement curriculum.

Baseball in America
Class Dates: May 19 – 30

Baseball in America will study the development of the game as it influences the history and culture of the United States. The class will look closely at the history of the game and focus on specific issues that have affected American life. Students in this class will travel to Peoria, Ill., on May 28 to attend a Peoria Chiefs Single-A Minor League baseball game and interview players.

Civil Rights, Then and Now: Retracing the Steps of the 1961 Freedom Rides
Class Dates: May 19 – June 1

This travel course on civil rights offers students the unique opportunity to learn about the civil rights movement, community organizing, allyship, and student activism. Students will retrace the steps of the monumental 1961 Freedom Rides through several historical southern cities: Nashville, Tenn., Birmingham, Ala., Montgomery, Ala., Selma, Ala., Jackson, Miss., and Memphis, Tenn. Students will travel to various landmarks, museums and other educational sites to foster dialogue and learning.
