Two groups of Millikin University students are among the top performing teams in the country following the spring 2011 Capstone Business Policy course, offered through Capsim Management Simulations.
Offered twice a year, many universities across the United States participate in the Capstone Business Policy course. Over 1520 teams competed in this semester’s simulation, which utilizes 5 performance metrics: profit by round, cumulative profit, change in stock price, return on equity (ROE), return on assets (ROA), and asset turnover. The simulation runs for eight rounds, each of which is considered a year. The 5 metrics above are calculated for each round for each group. At the conclusion of the simulation, two Millikin groups demonstrated superior decision making.
“The simulation included some of the top teams in the country, and we’re very excited to see our students achieve such great success as they perform and compete,” remarked Dr. Jim Dahl, dean of the Tabor School of Business.
Team Baldwin, comprised of Kevin Chavez, Brett Coffman, Dan Gongora, Ed Kelly, and Justin Thompson, ranked first country during the final round of return on equity. In addition, this team finished the last round by scoring 33rd in the country on return on assets. Another Millikin team, Team Digby, comprised of students Ed Kirsch, Dustin Moore, Amanda Petrovic, and Cody Thatcher, ranked 11th in the country on asset turnover for the final round.
Capsim business simulations engage participants in a dynamic competition to turn struggling companies into successful, profitable businesses. Classes are divided into teams that work together to focus on strategy, finance, production, marketing and all the key elements that interact to build their business. Instructors focus on directing the learning experience towards defined learning goals.
With each round of decision making— representing a full year for the company—participants build their business acumen and decision-making confidence as they interpret data, shape strategies and experience the results.
