Blue Connection, Millikin University’s student-run retail art gallery is pleased to welcome Millikin student Kari Thornton as its summer artist-in-residence June 21 through July 8.
Throughout her residency, Thornton will work on site from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily creating original artwork and interacting with gallery patrons.
“My paintings are reflections of our identity as consumers and how major corporations use materialistic items to create our identity," remarked Thornton. "It has to do not only with the identity of the consumer, but identity of paint as form. Paint is no longer an object one can only put on canvas, but it is a medium to create a form. Something I love about this medium is that it can take any identity. When applied to objects, such as a plastic cup or plastic bag, it peels the ink off and takes its form and identity.”
In addition to her paintings, Thornton will throw pottery and work with clay to develop ceramic vessels. Thornton’s art will be featured during the After 5 Live events on July 8 and August 3.
Started in 2009, the Blue Connection Artist Residency gives Millikin art and design students the opportunity to establish a professional reputation in Decatur and the surrounding area while engaging the public in activity at the gallery.
Opened in 2003, Blue Connection is Millikin’s student-run, retail art gallery located in the Madden Arts Center in Downtown Decatur, Illinois. Blue Connection features valuable, yet affordable artwork by Millikin University students, faculty, and alumni. The gallery also serves as a laboratory experience for Millikin University's Arts & Entrepreneurship Program.
Millikin’s Arts & Entrepreneurship Program is a six-credit sequence providing students with the tools necessary to think entrepreneurially by identifying their passion, recognizing opportunities, and developing viable business strategies. Students act as owners of Blue Connection, making all managerial and operational decisions for the gallery.
