First year students at Millikin University will get a jump start on their college experience during Millikin's First Week program, to be held Aug. 20-26.
The week of activities is designed to help students become acclimated and immersed in their new Millikin home before regular classes begin on Aug. 26. First Week activities begin with Move-In Day on Tuesday, Aug. 20 and continue through Monday, Aug. 26.
An integral part of the First Week experience is the Millikin men's and women's identity summits. The summits allow first year students to address pertinent topics that they will face throughout their college career at Millikin.
Millikin's First Week experience will also feature speaker Jessica Pettitt on Aug. 20. Jessica Pettitt is a three-time nominee for Best Diversity Artist by Campus Activities Magazine. Her programs are direct, customized, and highly interactive. Her keynote sessions take participants on a journey weaving together politics, theory, current events, and storytelling. Pettitt will open First Week with her keynote address, "Be the Change you Want to Be."
The First Week program also features Mission IMPROVable on Aug. 21. Mission IMPROVable is Chicago's award winning improv comedy group that provides an exciting new form of comedy. The on-the-spot randomness provided by the audience makes each mission truly unique and very often hysterical.
A highlight of the week's activities will be the Class of 2017 Day of Action, which will take place on Saturday, Aug. 24. Day of Action is Millikin's opportunity to give back to the Decatur community by sending students into the neighborhoods for service opportunities. This year, Millikin will be combining with the United Way's Day of Action to perform services at 19 different sites including the Decatur Fire Department, Dennis Elementary Lab School, Dove, Inc., and Easter Seals of Central Illinois.
The week concludes with Opening Convocation on Aug. 26 at 7 p.m. in the Kirkland Fine Arts Center, where Millikin faculty and students gather to celebrate the beginning of the academic year. The program will feature Millikin faculty and student speakers.
