Millikin University will honor approximately 130 graduates at the 2013 Winter Commencement ceremony on Sunday, Dec. 15 at 2 p.m. in the Kirkland Fine Arts Center. Graduates from Millikin's traditional undergraduate program, evening degree completion program (PACE), and the Master of Science in Nursing program will be honored during the ceremony.
Dr. Betty J. Horton, Ph.D., CRNA, FAAN, will deliver the commencement address. Student speakers include Jonathan M. Williamsen II of Beecher, Ill., who will receive a Bachelor of Arts degree in human services with a Spanish minor; and Tiffany Kloeppel of Savoy, Ill., who will be graduating from the nurse anesthesia track of the Master of Science in Nursing program.
The ceremony will feature musical performances by Millikin University's Guitar Ensemble I, under the direction of Manley T. Mallard, Millikin associate professor of music; and Millikin University's Chamber Chorale, under the direction of Dr. Guy Forbes, Millikin professor of music.
Dr. Horton is a native of Decatur, Ill., where she graduated from Decatur High School, Macon County Hospital's School of Nursing, and Decatur Memorial Hospital's School for Nurse Anesthetists. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1978, a Master of Arts degree in adult education in 1980, and a Master of Science degree in nursing in 1993. She also holds a Ph.D. from Rush University in Chicago.
Dr. Horton was employed as director of the Nurse Anesthesia Program in Decatur for many years. In 1990, she became the director of Accreditation and Education for the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) and Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs (COA). During her tenure with the accrediting agency, she was instrumental in transitioning education programs from the certificate to master's degree level.
During her career, Dr. Horton has worked as a consultant to universities (including a feasibility study for a nurse anesthesia program at Millikin University), nurse anesthesia programs, and organizations on education and accreditation matters both nationally and internationally. In addition to her current consulting business, Dr. Horton is an author of numerous publications and a frequent speaker at professional meetings.
