Millikin University’s Art Department and Center for Entrepreneurship will host the sixth annual High School Art Show on Saturday, Nov. 10 in the Perkinson Gallery in Millikin’s Kirkland Fine Arts Center. An opening reception and awards ceremony will be held for teachers, students, parents and the public from 4 p.m. – 6 p.m.
The show will highlight the exceptional artwork of high school students from throughout central Illinois. Submissions will be judged and students will have the opportunity to win cash prizes and scholarships to Millikin University.
The competition’s focus on entrepreneurship sets this event apart from other art contests. Students have the opportunity to participate in Arts, Creativity, and Entrepreneurship (A.C.E.), a day of workshops and presentations designed to engage students in the business of art. These sessions will include a how-to on preparing a portfolio for college submission, a workshop on studio drawing, and a chance to participate in a young professional artists roundtable. In addition, students will be encouraged to price their work to sell at the show.
The guest judge for this year’s show is Millikin alum M. Ben Cohan ’06. Cohan is a painter and an art instructor at Lake Land College in Mattoon, Ill. He received his associate’s degree in art from Lake Land College in 2004. He earned his bachelor’s degree with an emphasis in painting, drawing and printmaking from Millikin University in 2006. From 2006 to 2009, Cohan worked toward his master’s degree at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. He has been working at Lake Land College since 2009 and was hired on as a full-time instructor in 2011.
Cohan has a studio in Sullivan, Ill. where he is active in the Sullivan Area Arts Council and is a member of the Factory Art Studios. The Factory houses Gallery 709 which Cohan operates in order to showcase his studio work as well as other exhibitions.
Cash prizes will be awarded to Best of Show and to selected Honorable Mention Award recipients. Millikin Scholarships will be awarded to the top three winners. Millikin Art Faculty Awards will also be presented.
The exhibit will be on display from Nov. 5 – Nov. 30 in Perkinson Gallery in Kirkland Fine Arts Center.
