On Friday, Oct. 2, more than 75 members of the Millikin University family woke up before the sun and descended upon the parking lot of Kroger on Route 36 in Decatur to deliver the Big Blue’s contribution in support of the 2026 WSOY Community Food Drive. Millikin collected more than $8,250 in dollars/pounds, exceeding its goal of $8,125.

The Millikin community came together in support of its goal, set in honor of the University’s 125th anniversary. Collection bins were placed throughout campus, students collected food at drive-thru events each Wednesday during the month of September, and departments throughout campus issued social media challenges to one another to give in support of the drive. The University also received support from campus and community partners, including a 1,200 pound donation from Aramark Dining Services, and a 1,300 pound contribution from Central Christian Church.

Dr. Dean A. Pribbenow, Millikin University President, and Lori Kerans ’85, Vice President for Athletics & Community Engagement, were on hand to present Millikin’s check to Brian Byers and Kevin Breheny at the drive. For Kerans, who chaired the University’s efforts, the morning was a meaningful reminder of the difference that can be made when people unite around a shared need.

“This was such a great example of what happens when the Big Blue family comes together for our community,” Kerans said. “Our students, employees, alumni, partners, and friends all found a way to contribute, and I am especially proud of the energy our students brought to the drive. We’re grateful for the opportunity to support the WSOY Community Food Drive and the important work it does for families across Decatur and Macon County.”

The WSOY Community Food Drive, widely regarded as the largest single-day food drive in the country, raised a record-breaking $1,051,034 in just 12 hours thanks to the support of schools, businesses, nonprofit organizations, and individuals in the greater Decatur community.

On Friday morning, Millikin University students, employees, and supporters — led by the Cheerleading squad — escorted the delivery truck to the drop-off location. Students from several Big Blue Athletic teams, sororities, and other organizations unloaded the truck and presented the food for weighing. Proceeds from the drive will support food banks and other feeding programs throughout Decatur and Macon County.
