SUMMARY:

This position will report to the Head Football Coach.  This internship is designed as a 11-month educational experience and is designed to give an individual with an interest in coaching the opportunity to hone his skill development and coaching ability in one or more position areas.  The appointment is for one year, with a possible one-year renewal.  Pursuing a graduate degree at a nearby university may be possible.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:   

  1. Learn the process for recruiting successful student athletes.
  2. Assist in recruitment and retention of football players for Millikin University.
  3. Gain an understanding for the role of the student athlete in a DIII Athletic Program.
  4. Develop skills to compete for a full-time assistant coaching position or graduate assistantship.
  5. Serve as a position coach.
  6. Develop ability to break down film in conjunction with other football staff.
  7. Develop ability to monitor academic progress of student-athletes.
  8. Have an opportunity to gain an understanding of the structure and organization of the NCAA, specifically Division III.
  9. Have an opportunity to gain an understanding of the role of athletics in a relatively small comprehensive University.
  10. Have an opportunity to gain exposure to athletic operations and event management beyond football.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This position does not have supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.    

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to succeed in a result-driven professional organization. Maintaining professional performance, demeanor, team-approach and focus on results while working under pressure in a dynamic environment. Ability to establish priorities, work independently with minimal supervision, and facilitate teamwork. Highly organized, with the ability to plan, execute and multitask to meet deadlines. Must have a demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.  

 Minimum Education and/or Experience  

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Prior collegiate playing experience preferred
  • Strong and positive interpersonal skills

WORKING CONDITIONS Typical working conditions found in most outdoor athletic scenarios.  Flexibility to work a flexible work schedule.  Ability to travel with the team, either by vehicle or plane.  May required periodic overnight travel.  Occasionally sitting at a desk or table; occasional lifting 25 lbs. or more.  Constant standing; hearing and visual acuity within normal range; ability to stoop, kneel, and crouch occasionally; high degree of mobility required.    Dexterity to operate a keyboard.  Outdoor exposure to all types of weather. 

INTERPERSONAL SKILLS Communicates effectively and appropriately. Gets along and cooperates with co-workers and appropriately interacts with others. Participates and functions as an effective member of the team.  

CONFIDENTIALITY Exchanges university information with others only on a "need to know" basis.    

ATTENDANCE Promptly arrives for the designated shift.  Follows all applicable policies regarding schedules, attendance, and organizational requirements.  May involve longer days, weekends, and off shifts as required to successfully perform job duties.  Excessive absenteeism will hinder successful job performance.   

SAFETY Understands and always uses safe practices.  Reports all unsafe conditions to Public Safety immediately.  Assures all equipment functions properly before use.  Knows and adheres to all safety and fire prevention rules and regulations.  Knows location and use of personal protective equipment, fire plan, SDS and Disaster Plan.
