Idea-to-Incubator Program

2018 Idea-to-Incubator Summer Program

Have an idea that you would like to make into a reality? Apply for the Idea-to-Incubator summer program! In this twelve-week program, you will develop your venture while fully immersing yourself in the life of an entrepreneur. In addition to dedicated resources to develop yourself and your venture, you will receive a $500 fellowship and employment at Blue Brew or other available student-run venture (approximately 7 hours per week, ~$500 over the summer), for a total of $1,000 in financial support.

Undergraduate and MBA students at Millikin who have a business idea, a project with commercial application, or a start-up in the process of being launched are encouraged to apply.

Applications in the area of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) will receive special attention. A maximum of three students may collaborate on a team. Up to 12 fellowships will be awarded.

Application Information

The application deadline is Friday, March 30, 2018. Applicants will be invited to present their idea and summer goals to the selection committee between April 2 and April 6, with first offers being made Friday, April 6. Since this is past the Wood's summer housing registration deadline, the Woods has extended the deadline to April 13 for program participants.

Idea-to-Incubator Summer Program FAQs

What will I do over the summer?
You will devote yourself to validating your business idea, developing target customer markets, or preparing to launch your business.

  • Weekly meetings with designated mentors (Decatur entrepreneurs or business leaders) and A4E Fellows
  • Weekly workshops
  • Day trips to Chicago for workshops at various co-working spaces

Where will I work?
The Idea-to-Incubator summer program will be based out of the Center for Entrepreneurship. Participants may also have access to a co-working space in downtown Decatur.

Where will I live?
There are various summer housing options around Decatur. For those interested in living at the Woods, the registration deadline (April 1) has been extended to April 13 for Idea-to-Incubator participants. Summer housing at the Woods is available for $500 and is free for rising seniors.

Do I have to be there the whole summer?
Yes. A full-time job is not conducive to successfully participating in the Idea-to-Incubator program. Part-time employment is possible as long as it does not interfere with workshops and scheduled trips. Participants scheduled to be a part of Millikin summer immersions may still be a part of the Idea-to-Incubator program.

Can I apply alone?
Yes! You can also apply with up to three team members.

What if I don't have a business idea but want to participate?
You will start with assignments related to observation and problem identification.

What if my project fails mid-summer?
Good! You will learn the art of the pivot.
