Lester “Skip” Mathieson

Lester Mathieson

Skip Mathieson loved three things above all: his family, his friends, and football. He was a standout athlete at DePauw University, where he was later inducted into the Hall of Fame, and built a coaching career that spanned New York, Indianapolis, and Central Illinois before landing at Millikin. He served as Head Football Coach and Athletic Director for the Big Blue from 1966 to 1977, leading them to two bowl games and was inducted into Millikin's Athletic Hall of Fame in 1990. After stints at the University of Cincinnati, he returned to Decatur to found Coaches’ Corner and Touchdown Sportswear. Whether on the sidelines or behind a counter, Skip’s gift was expecting the best from people and helping them find it in themselves. He passed away March 26 at 90 years old, survived by Sally, his wife of nearly 70 years; their four children; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
