DECATUR, Ill. — The story of the man whose vision helped shape both the city of Decatur and the founding of Millikin University will take center stage this spring with the premiere of a new documentary, “The Original Big Blue: The Life & Times of James Millikin.”

Produced by Jim Wilkerson, President of James Millikin Homestead, Inc., and a Millikin graduate from the Class of 1997, the film explores the life, character and legacy of James Millikin – entrepreneur, civic leader and founder of Millikin University. The documentary will debut with a series of public screenings in Decatur, including two showings on the Millikin University campus.
Through historical storytelling, community perspectives and archival material, the film traces Millikin’s journey from his Scotch-Irish and Pennsylvania roots to his rise as a successful livestock trader, real estate investor and banker who ultimately became one of Decatur’s most influential leaders.
“Millikin’s story is ultimately about character,” said Wilkerson. “His reputation for integrity, his belief in Decatur’s future, and his commitment to education and community-building shaped this city in ways we still recognize today – especially through Millikin University and the James Millikin Homestead.”
The documentary highlights key chapters of Millikin’s life and impact, including his entrepreneurial rise in Central Illinois, his guiding philosophy – “What is for Decatur’s good is for my good” – and the lasting legacy of his vision for education that led to the founding of Millikin University.
The film also explores the history and architectural significance of the Millikin family mansion at 125 North Pine Street, now preserved as the James Millikin Homestead and maintained as a historic site celebrating the founder’s life and legacy.
